What Is an Integrated Resort?

The "Integrated Resort" (IR) concept was formally codified in Singapore's 2005 Integrated Resort Development Act — a deliberate policy to attract a new class of large-scale, mixed-use hospitality complex that would generate economic benefits well beyond the gaming floor.

An IR is defined by the convergence of luxury accommodation, convention and exhibition facilities, theatrical entertainment venues, world-class food and beverage operations, retail, and a regulated gaming floor under a single roof. Gaming represents, on average, 30–40% of total IR revenue — the majority derives from hospitality, food, and entertainment.

The concept transformed cities: Las Vegas' rebrand from vice capital to family entertainment destination in the 1990s, Singapore's rapid rise to Asia's premier business tourism hub following the Marina Bay Sands opening in 2010, and Macau's evolution from colonial backwater to the world's highest-grossing gaming jurisdiction.

Architecture

Design Principles of the Modern Casino Resort

The physical environments of premier integrated resorts are among the most intentionally engineered spaces in contemporary hospitality architecture — every surface, light source, and acoustic treatment serves a precise function.

💡

Lighting Design

Casino floors use layered LED systems producing a constant warm "golden hour" at eye level — suppressing time-awareness while maintaining alertness through biologically effective wavelengths in cooler upper zones.

🔊

Acoustic Engineering

Premier properties use Meyer Sound or d&b Audiotechnik zone-specific speaker arrays — maintaining energetic ambiance on the floor while achieving near-complete acoustic isolation in adjacent fine dining and lounge spaces.

🗺️

Spatial Flow

21st-century IRs moved away from deliberately disorientating maze layouts in favour of intuitive boulevard models — natural wayfinding between amenity zones, promoting discovery without frustration.

🌿

Biophilic Atria

Wynn, Venetian, and Marina Bay Sands all incorporate large-scale interior gardens and living botanical installations as centrepiece architectural features — a biophilic trend that dominates contemporary casino-hotel design.
